Definition
Hypernyms are words with a broad meaning constituting a category into which words with more specific meanings fall; a superordinate. Contrasted with hyponym.
Example
colour is a hypernym of red, green, blue 
red is a hypernym of scarlet, vermilion, carmine, and crimson
