Version 1: Placeholder expression

Choose one placeholder expression (PHE) for your language. It is fine if you just use ONE possible type of uses. If you use several types of uses, you need to identify them and provide a detailed characterization for one of them.

  • Extract corpus occurrences:
  • English: 60 examples
  • Other language in Latin script (Bosnian, French, German, Turkish): 25 example; provide gloss and translation for each example
  • Language with different script (Urdu): 15 examples provide transliteration, gloss, and translation for each example
  • Annotate your occurrences:
  • Target: What is the target? Is the target overtly present in the sentence/context? Is there a repetion of part of the structure?
  • If you have several use types of your PHE: annotate each example with respect to which type (type 1 PHE, type 2 PHE, hedging, ...)
  • Provide a characterization of your PHE:
  • Formal characterization: syntactic category, inflectional properties of the PHE
  • PHE formation pattern (Podlesskaya): thing-type? special word? question form?...
  • Given an Enfield-style characterization (semantics, speaker motivation, recoverability condition, others)

Version 2: Smurfing

Choose one Smurf story. Write to me to see how you get access to the data.

  • Extract all instances of smurfing and annotate them according the scheme from our course.
  • State in a separate file:
  • Percentage of literal vs. unspecified smurfing
  • Number of the instances of unspecified smurfing for each of the parts of speech
  • Which cases are problematic for Chatzopoulos 2008 and why?

Meeting 2

Homework task

Task:

  • Pick 1 or 2 PHEs from your language
  • Describe their type according to Podlesskaya 2010
  • Find naturally occurring examples of different types of uses
  • Comment on the examples according to what is said in Podlesskaya 2010
